Back to Using the Needles Again

Back in action! Whipped up some baby booties and a hat within an evening. Baby stuff always goes fast. Gave me motivation, though to start using the needles again. Sigh... It's been a while folks!

I improvised the Pattons pattern a bit for the hat just because I wanted to match the hat I just created. The yarn doesn’t have wool to felt. So, I used fewer stitches and made it to fit a baby younger than a year old. I started with 6 stitches at the tip, added two to each side, then when increasing for the sides and bottom part, I added four stitches to each side, then an additional two to each side. Ended up a bout the right size! Also, this was made for a boy, so I just used a simple double crochet band around the leg opening instead of the frilly looking finish in the pattern.

The hat... Very easy and quick project in a great One Skein Wonder book. Cute little curl at the top. Wanted mine to appear more curved, so when I thread the end from the tip back in, I tied it to the base a bit tighter. Makes it appear more curved.

Quick Way to Use Up Scrap Yarn

Needed to create some quick projects for a friend's wedding/baby shower this past weekend. Had plenty of scrap yarn, so decided to create these little hats for her. By doing stripes, I figured it would make the yarn go farther. And it did. Might as well go beyond the typical pastel baby color items.

St. Patty's Green Ball-less Penis Cozy

We spend so much time figuring out what accessories to where on special occasions, never forget the endless possibilities to accessorize the drink in your hand. St. Patty's Day is always a fun holiday to wear everything green you own. Some one decided I should knit up some penis cozies with little four leaf clovers that could "accessorize" the accessory. They were made in a circle and would be detachable. Got a few complements on them, but non as much as the cat shirt that Jason wore that evening. :D

Sock Monkey Hat

Always wanted to create one of these hats, but could never find the right striped yarn. This yarn is a discontinued yarn made by Bernat. It was going on clearance at Michael's, so I bought out all that I could find. Michael's seem to clear out old yarns late winter after all the holidays are over. Wish they had an online store like Jo Ann's. Jo Ann's is really nice to go online and look through their clearance section of yarn. There are patterns out there for different sock monkey hats, but I just improvised this one off a hat I liked online. Again, the strings on the ear flaps have a tassel attached at the bottom of each one.

Fashionable Floral Fuzzy Fun Cowl

Created this for my mom. She's pretty knowledgeable of flowers. Bought a book on Amazon.com called 100 Flowers to Knit and Crochet", and let her pick out her favorite flower. She picked out the blue-bell flower. It's a great book that most of the patterns I've tried thus far have all worked out really well. I like Amazon's selection of knitting and crochet books because they're always half the costs of buying them anywhere else!

Got a Big Hat for Some Big Hair

Friend wanted a hat that could cover her dreds. She was also a fan of the earflap hats. So, we created this design together. Simple and quick! Was made with thick 'n quick yarn by Lionbrand. For the color green did a single crochet and then for the brown stripe it was done with double crochet. Just do a simple tassel for the end of the two strings on either side of the earflaps.

Baby Mittens Made in an Hour

So, by now every one should be able to tell I'm a sucker for quick one-two-three hour knits! Can't help it. Today this society is pretty much ADHD. Anyway, if you follow this pattern on Lionbrand.com, it'll turn out smaller, but play around with the gauging and increase your stitches and rows, and you'll find this is a really great quick and easy project. Especially since I'm slower at crochet than knitting, this still didn't take long at all. Mini mittens are adorable!

Camelot Hat - 2.5hr Knitted Hat Pattern

Really easy and cute hat! Great for those who don't like to mess up their 'do with a tight beanie cap. I used similar size worsted weight yarn. Pattern does turn out slightly smaller than what it appears in the photo. I even used size 10.5 needles instead of 10. Maybe add 4-8 most stitches when casting on. Also go more 9 inches in the length before getting to the crown shaping. I went 7 inches, but still doesn't look as long as the one in the picture. Pattern is located on Lionbrand's site here.

Pedicure Socks Knit Pattern

Great gift for your sister, aunt, mother, grandmother, or whoever you know that gets pedicures all year round. These are basically toeless socks. Great for those who don't like to graft the toe part of a sock. It's a free Patons pattern you can find here.

I used slightly thicker weight yarn with a size larger needles and followed the smallest size in the pattern to make socks that would fit my mother's 9.5 shoe size. A great gift for yoga enthusiasts.

Christmas Wine Bottle Cozy Made Under One Hour

Looking for a quick and easy project to give this year? These wine cozies took less than an hour each to construct. Pretty easy knitting pattern:
-- Double up your yarn when knitting and use size 10 needles --
1. CO 26sts
2. Knit up to height of wine bottle (11-12in) while changing colors every sixth row
3. Cozy bottom is a simple crochet circle
4. Use ribbon, an i-cord, or extra yarn for your tie
5. Add an embellishment with the tie like a candy-cane, candies, pompoms, or bells!

Pretty simple. Not as cute as the Santa cozy, but it's quick and easy for when you're in a time crunch.

Purple Easy Crocheted Shrug

This shrug is made a lot like the Easy Lace Shrug in that it is just three rectangles. One rectangle with two rectangle sleeves. You just sew up the seems of each arm to the arm pits. Pretty simple stitch, too! Dc, ch2, and repeat. Gotta love brainless patterns!

Floppy Kat Hat

Just finished up this cute floppy hat for my mother in a few hours! Quick and easy. The pattern is from Let's Knit Magazine 19, 2009 (originally a UK publication). Pattern showed thinner and more slick yarn, so when I used this thicker rougher yarn the stitch definition didn't come out as well. Overall, the shape came out great. Instead of adding the bow that was in the pattern, I went for adding a flower since my mother loves flowers. Mother approved you could say!

Great pattern found in Interweave Knit magazine. Project uses thicker yarn with larger needles, so it goes quick! The only thing, is the pattern is a little tricky to follow, so it needed total concentration! I would do this pattern again though. Really pretty texture and a great gift to give!

Wine Cozy - A Great Last Minute Gift

A coworker is having a dinnerware party at her new condo in Brownsburg, IN. As a house warming gift, wine is always a great idea! It can be affordable, and if you are a knitter/crocheter you can add a personal touch in less than an hour! Here's what I whipped up last night in less than an hour:

Crochet hook size 6.5 mm
Main sleeve:

Ch24
dc in fourth loop from hook, ch2, dc in third loop, repeat from to end of row. When turning, ch4 and dc on top of the second dc in the row below. The ch4 will count as your first dc. And continue ch2, dc in third loop repeat.
Continue until pattern has reached the height of your wine bottle.
Sew seam up the side.
Make a chain about 16 inches to create a tie for the top.

Grapes - create six:

Chain 4, slip stitch to form ring.
dc 10 times into ring.
Tie off and sew six grapes together.

Leaves for grapes - create two:

Chain 8.
tr in the fourth loop from hook, dc in the next loop, hdc in the next, and sc in the last loop.
Tie off and sow above the grapes.

Green Neck Cowl

So, I bought a pound of Caron yarn in hunter green. I have a friend who's going to grad school in the middle of the mountains of Virginia. So, I'm working on a package to send to her to keep warm and happy. No one ever sends packages anymore for fun it seems. I guess people are becoming more virtual with the increase of the web presence and resources, they don't feel the need to send little notes or goodies in the snail mail. In the book: One More Skein there is a great pattern for some footies. The book says it is a quick project. It is, unless you are a bit slow at cables like myself, and in this pattern you do them quit frequently. It took me a bit to do them, but not as bad since it was with thicker yarn on larger needles. They are perfect for walking around the house in. Real cozy.

Easy, Do It in an Evening, Bolero

This is such an easy pattern. There's some problems with how it's written that I'm still figuring out. This is the second time I've done this pattern now. The first time looked like this: St. Patty's Day Shrug I'm getting closer to having it spot on. The only thing I did differently this time is knit it all with size 15 needles (pattern called for you to switch to a 10.5 needle every so often). The only thing I would suggest for next time is to add more stitches to the co of the two front triangles. They need to be just a smidgen larger to fit around 'the girls.'

The Bathing Suit Cover That Fell too short

Why do patterns always fall short? They appear to be the right length on the models always. Are those models petite? Every pattern I've always just added on a few inches to the bottom of the piece. This one I did just that and it still is too short to even be considered for a bathing suit cover. It makes a great longer top though!

Boss' Blanket

My boss asked me to make her a blanket. She came in with sample patterns of granny square blankets she wanted. We picked one that was an intermediate skill level. She picked the yarn and colors from Hobby Lobby to match her guest room (which turns out to be Christmas colors - I guess she could use this throw as duel purposes then). Not a fan of the granny square technique. It took my 20-30 minutes each square! I guess when they say 'intermediate' they mean time-wise and not skill level. It was an easy pattern, but took too long to do. I will have to add granny squares to my list of "I will never do this again" projects. Among that list are doilies. Will never do one of those again either.

The Six Hour Throw

Again, this was another really great, fast, and easy pattern to follow from Lionbrand.com! You use US50/25mm needles with four strands of category five thickness yarn (in this case Homespun). It calls for eight skeins total. You don't use all of the yarn to get the size they state in the pattern, so you can go a little wider and longer in the pattern even! Really soft and warm, and it REALLY took less than six hours.

Thick 'n Quick Neck Cowl

Lionbrand.com has some of the best free patterns available on their site. I'm trying to get rid of the scraps of yarn leftover still. This was an easy way to get rid of the thicker yarn that wouldn't be enough to do a full scarf or anything else really. A nice neck cowl worked out! Really soft and warm! I like the neck cowls because they work as a scarf and a hood. You just pull it up over your head when you need it as both.

Gotta love the yarn that hides the definition of stitches. Makes it appear almost felted. The yarn is from Jo Ann fabrics. Click here to see their colors. I did a blanket not too long ago for some one else. It's super warm when you double up the threads. Great for hats, mittens, and scarves as well! I did the blanket with double st crochet, but really like how it looks with just single st crochet.

Cable Knit Pillow

I followed this pattern from here and made two pillows for my mom's new purple leather chair. I think this was my first successful cable project. Haven't really tried tackling one outside of just doing a swatch.

However, the pattern needs stretched over the pillow a bit too much, so if you try this pattern I'd advise adding 8-12 more stitches onto you cast on row.

Another real simple pattern for an unique crop sweater top was in this knitting calendar. You knit it all in on continuous piece, so there's minimal weaving ends in.

I like those calendars because they give you an idea of how many days it should take you to do each project.

Red Heart Sock Yarn

Red Heart Yarn has this affordable sock yarn that the color variation creates a pattern as you go. Looks really nice! Just has a little bit of chemical smell, but it comes out in washings. I picked up this pattern off one of those free project pads in the yarn aisle of Michael's.

Floral Scarf

I added a few more colors to the design. The pattern was really nice because the pattern calls for you to start one flower and slip stitch it to the next flower. Lots of chaining. Not a lot of stitching. Weaving in all the ends was a biotch!

Fair Isle First

Just tried designing my first Fair Isle project. Started with a simple floral pattern for a hat.

Fair Isle's really not as bad as I imagined. I actually like the fact that it's only two colors per row. Otherwise, I can see where things would get crazy.

Started with 84 stitches at the bottom and worked my way up with Lion Brand's Vanna's Choice Yarn on size 7 knitting needles.

One Skein Wonders Really Are a Wonder

So, I love knitting. When it's quick and easy. I'm not very good at following patterns with a whole bunch of steps. I just get so ADD. Not only that, but I'll leave the project and sit it to the side for a while (like a month or a year). When I get back to it, I've forgotten where I left off. It also frustrates me when I follow a pattern with the measurements that should fit me, but when it does, it makes me look like the State Puff Marshmellow Man. Yeah... not good.

So, if you are like me and like quick and easy projects, pick up the One Skein Wonders book, and this pattern is in it. I've made this one and a pink one for my sister. Probably took 4 hours from start to finish. Love it!

First Experience from a Novelty Yarn Store

I've purchased nice yarns in the past from yarn shops here and there (Savanah, GA, Indianapolis, IN, Chicago, IL). So, I've purchased those great hand dyed yarns, but never have made them into a finished piece. Instead, they sit in the bottom of my other yarns. I just keep waiting to find that right project to use them in. Does any one else have the same problem?

Finally, I finished one pice with two skeins of this fabulous multicolored yarn that goes from fat to skinny in places. I've gotten tons of compliments on the scarf. Gotta say, it was worth the investment. I made it thinking I would eventually give it to some one as a gift because blues and greens are not my favorite colors, but ended up keeping it for myself... again, does anyone have that problem as well?

So, summer time is a great time to buy off holiday yarns. I scored some sweet furry eyelash yarns from Hobby Lobby early summer for $1.19 per skein. No, that's not a poo blanket, but a Pooh blanket! Made for a friend's wife who's into Disney and loves Winnie the Pooh. I did a mini-mural in their soon to be nursery. I'm not an expert when weaving in new colors, but I can make it work!
